I work in oil pastels as my main medium; you can visit my site where there are a lot on the homepage at www.artwell.nl. Also I recently posted one on my blog (you can get there from my site).<br />Anyway, to avoid that &#39;empty&#39; effect you described with oil pastels on a white background, you can use colored heavy weight charcoal paper. The oil pastel colors just glow on intense colored backgrounds. I recently have been sketching in a loose background in acrylic and then adding oil pastels when it is dry.
