Hi Robin, I arrived here via a comment you left on Michale Nobb's blog. I like your blog. I work in oil pastels as my main medium; you can visit my site where there are a lot on the homepage at www.artwell.nl. Also I recently posted one on my blog (you can get there from my site). Anyway, to avoid that 'empty' effect you described with oil pastels on a white background, you can use colored heavy weight charcoal paper. The oil pastel colors just glow on intense colored backgrounds. I recently have been sketching in a loose background in acrylic and then adding oil pastels when it is dry. Have fun, cheers, Sarah
